The fashion shoot was a fun night with four of us taking photos. It was interesting to see the strong difference in styles between the three adults that were shooting (and how Jayde mimics my style in some ways - apples don't fall far from the tree).

Anyway, on to a new topic. It's that busy time of year again, so the current topic will go for 4 weeks, and will feature the theme of "Christmas Holidays" - with any luck, we might find it easy to spot a few things that fit in with the topic ... whether it's the family vacation, the CHristmas get together or Christmas paraphernalia, I'm sure we'll all be taking photos at some point. I really enjoyed the fashion shoot! I took the girls to Red Hill & made them run around in the long grass. These are my favourites - i think because the outfits suited the location really well (for a fashion shoot....not to go hiking or anything ;)) and all fitted in with the style I was going for.

OK, something a bit different for this fortnight's topic. There's a choice of two ways to shoot for this topic. The first is simply to take photos that you feel would classify as a portrait or fashion shoot. The second way is that we will be holding a photo shoot on the 24th Nov for those who are able to participate.

For a portrait, your purpose is in trying to capture a persons face and their expression. This means that the photo is usually going to be composed of somebody in a still position.

For a fashion shoot, the focus is less on the person, as it is about the clothing or fashion items and accessories (eg worn jewellery) and trying to emphasise those.

For those of us in Canberra, I've arranged for the Tuggeranong YW to be available at Garran at 6PM on Wed 24th Nov. We'll have up to 7 or 8 girls to use as models to shoot. Here's a chance to experiment with portrait and/or Fashion shots with the girls. In return, we'll offer the girls the opportunity to have a copy of any of the photos of them that they like (at their expense of course!)

So, you can either have a go at home, or come down on the 24th. Photographer Shanna Jones has volunteered to come and help us out with the shoot on the 24th as well. You can check out some of Shanna's work on her website: Jolie Jones Photography

Either there aren't very many pretty sunsets here in Maryland, or else I just don't spend much time outside anymore! We went into downtown Washington D.C. though a few days ago and I took a few evening shots of the monuments and memorials. They are a bit grainy because I didn't have my tripod so I turned the ISO up high. Anyway, it's nice to do a post again. With missing Australia I went on a photo strike for a while and rarely pulled my camera out of the closet. I hope everyone is doing well. :)

Oh and a heads up for the following topic. It looks like we are going to get our "Fashion Shoot". On the last week of November, it looks like we are going to have the Young Women of Tuggeranong Ward available as "models" for a fashion shoot and/or portrait shots for their weekly activity. We just need to let them know where/when etc so that they can plan things in. They normally have YW on Wed night 7-8:30, but could change if needed. Who in Canberra would like to take part in practicing some shots on live subjects, and does the Wed night work for you?

EOS Photo5 Competition

Just a quick note for anyone who isn't aware about the EOS Photo5 competition. Run by Canon, it's an annual creative photography competition for amateurs. Those who register for the competition (registration is free!) will get sent a small box of 5 items in the mail from Canon. The entrants then have the opportunity to try and take creative photos using each of the objects supplied by Canon. Entrants can then submit one photo for each of the 5 supplied objects to a special website. Canon will have judges pick the top 10 photos for each of the 5 objects, following which there is then a public vote for the winner for each of the 5 different subjects.

Prizes includes professional cameras and trips to New Zealand.

Full details can be found at the Photo5 website as well as galleries of finalists from previous years.

For those of us in the Canberra it's springtime, so I figured that New Life would be an appropriate topic - the chance to take photos of the myriad of colours in nature that abound. But that's not the only way to interpret this topic - babies, a building being renovated, somebody turning over a new life ... how would you interpret "New Life"?

Well, I was happy that it wasn't just Jayde & I posting photos on the last topic - thanks for the contributions :)

I'm going to go for two semi-related topics over the coming month. The new topic is "Past Its Prime." I'd suggested the topic "decay" to Emma before as I quite like taking photos of old equipment, building ruins, and things that overall look "grungey". So, in refining the topic, I was trying to work out how to expand it so that it's not too narrow, and thought that the concept of something that's past it's prime covers it. That could be people (I know that I'm now past my prime), it could be old buildings, it could be something from everyday use that is broken or worn. It's up to you to interpret the topic - take a photo of something that has seen better days and is now "Past Its Prime". I thought that this would be a challenge, as, in many photos we're trying to make something look "good, whereas this challenge is about emphasising that something is worn / used / broken / aged / run down / etc.

The follow on topic that will be in a couple of weeks will be "New Life" - which acts as a counterpoint to the current topic, but more about that topic in two weeks. For now - crack out your wizened elderly folk, your run down furniture, your falling down buildings or what have you, and show us something "Past Its Prime" :)

No editing allowed this fortnight! No cropping, no photoshop - we want to see your photos as they were shot.
For those who shoot RAW, you will have to switch to jpeg for this challenge. (When shooting jpeg you can change white balance, contrast, saturation and sharpening all in your camera settings.)
Take time with your composition & exposure - you will be able to get great shots. I think this is a good time to shoot with your camera on MANUAL! It is easier to get a correct exposure (rather than letting the camera choose ;)) so play around & see the results you can get. Good quality light is also very important too. Have fun & no cheating :D

I didn't get a chance at all this fortnight to go out & take a landscape photo. I took this shot on friday, from the car as we were driving home from Melbourne! So not what I would normally take :)

I thought I would post some from a few months ago. My favourite time to photograph landscapes is at sunset, when there are LOTS of clouds around. I like to wait til the sun has gone below the horizon, because the colours are amazing then! How I usually shoot at this time of night is exposing for the sky, so the land/mountains are silhouettes. Or underexpose the whole image by a stop or two. This way the colours will be deep & vibrant.
These 3 shots were all taken on the same night; the more orange one was shot towards where the sun had set, then the next taken further south from where the sun was etc.

Landscapes Advice - Paul Dowe

I'm presuming that Emma is referring to Paul Dowe - a professional landscape photographer from Perth - and good friend of ours, who is staying with us at the moment.

I showed him the blog and he was more than happy to oblige. Paul's advice with landscape shooting is:

The first half hour and last half hour of light each day is "when the magic happens"
Keep the composition simple - don't clutter the frame
Concentrate on your leading lines - remember to try and form a pathway for the eye to follow that tells a story.
Experiment with your depth of field.

"The three ingredients of Light, Composition and Depth of Field will produce something special when all three are right."

This isn't on the current topic, but I thought I'd throw it up on the blog for two reasons:

1. I thought this was a pretty good job, even if I do say so myself, and wanted to show it off; and

2. Wanted to know what suggestions anybody has to make it better?

Emma said it was OK to put up, so hope everyone doesn't mind.

Quick bit of background. Elissa made this dress for our daughter last week. Our daughter wore it to church on Sunday, and Elissa asked me to take a photo of it to put on our blog. I did so, with my daughter posing in the photos. I thought that one of the photos would make for an interesting photomanipulation, so I ended up playing around with it by adding the castle background, and adding a dagger into her hand. So, quick question, are there any bits in the "manipulated" photo that stand out as looking "wrong" or which you would change? Oh, and for the record, my in-laws have already told us they don't like the photo at all, so feel free to pan it as well :)

Ok, so this has been a hard topic...especially with limited equipment. I tried a few different ideas earlier this week, but nothing was really that impressive!! I got this shot today & it was a complete fluke. Then I tried to recreate it with a better background & after 100+ shots I gave up!!

FREEZE MOTION

This fortnight we want FAST shutter speeds! Here is an article with some awesome shots showing high speed photography. A lot of these sorts of shots (especially ones with black backgrounds/in dark rooms) have been set up with a sound trigger & flash. If you google it you can find lots on info on it - some people even make homemade sound triggers. I will just be using continuous shooting mode, lots of light, and just hope that I get the shot! If you want t o suggest a new topic, leave a comment here... next fortnight we are back to the beginning (A - for Adam…going in alphabetical order :)

I am more than happy for others to suggest the technical challenge (I’m not sure if I will get around/have time to do it each fortnight…) So, how about when your topic starts you can leave a comment to suggest a technical challenge too? Or you can just keep practicing using Av, then when you feel confident with that – move on to shutter priority, then eventually move onto full manual mode?? It will depend with each photo whether you want to have control over the aperture, shutter speed or both. We can also try things like backlighting, sunflare, long exposures etc…. ?
