Bokeh by Emma

I wanted to make sure I knew what Bokeh was before I took photos for this assignment. There is a lot of confusing information out there! Some say Bokeh is ALL of the blur that happens beyond the point of focus. Others say Bokeh is the shiny little circles of light created in a blurred area outside the point of focus. But then I read that the 'bright ring' effect is what leads to 'bad bokeh'!! Some think its the smooth & silky background blur. There are debates about what is "good" bokeh & "bad" bokeh. Who knew it could be so confusing.

This next quote I found is what I tend to agree with, but I guess its all VERY subjective!

"Bokeh describes the rendition of out-of-focus points of light. It describes the appearance or "feel" of out-of-focus backgrounds and foregrounds. Differing amounts of spherical aberration alter how lenses render out-of-focus points of light, and thus their bokeh. The word "bokeh" comes from the Japanese word "boke" (pronounced bo-keh) which literally means fuzziness or dizziness."

I really like that last one! It suits perfectly the mood of today (with the weather being so cold and wet). Plus just a great photo. The first photo fits really well with your definition as the out of focus background almost swirls around the in focus bit. Do other see that too? I like the circular 'fuzzy' light (sorry, i need a thesaurus) to the right of the leaf as well.
It's interesting as we go through these assignments to see how they all come together. Point of thirds, light (overcast?), Bokeh. These photos could work well in any of these categories.
Just two questions. How low of an aperture do you use for these (in order to get the blur so close to the focus point)? Do you use a macro lens?

That is my preferred definition too. I don't like the unfocused bit to have lots of the big unfocused circles because then it takes away the focused bit. Starting to confuse myself here. I think I have read too much about good and bad bokeh and it is all just blurring together.

I do like pictures of food to use/have (?) bokeh.

Anyway I really like your pictures too. Especially the water one. Very artistic. I can see that one on my wall!. Maybe you can do a set?

This is a good assignment because I had never even heard of bokeh before! It is a bit confusing but I like your explanation Emma. I also LOVE your water photo, it is super artistic and just an overall fantastic shot!

Thanks guys.
I shot these at f1.8. No, I dont have a macro lens. I was just testing out the different types of bokeh & didn't really put much thought into my subjects!

I might actually take more photos, but with my zoom lens & thus a larger f.stop and see how they turn out.

(Bindi - most food blogs have nice bokeh in their photos :) are you going to cook something to photograph for this challenge? I'll have to wait & see!)

The first one makes me feel dizzy as well! I really like the last one - have you altered the colours at all?

No, I haven't altered the colours at all.

So Emma....rather than sit tight for the rest of the fortnight can I give you another challenge? I would like to see you to do a portrait (child maybe since that's your forte?) using bokeh. Whaddaya say?

Sure Johanna! I was taking more photos today (at f5.6) but I'll wait til I get a portrait & post them all together.
