Yay. My turn to pick a new topic.
And it is... BOKEH.
I like bokeh. Lots. Just not very good at creating it when I mean to. Turns out well when I don't intend to do it!
There is are some good pages on bokeh at the Pioneer Woman (here and here). If you search for the term on Google lots of interesting information turns up as well.
Can't wait to see everyones' pictures with a little bokeh in them....

I LOVE Bokeh too - so magical :D
this looks like it will be fun. i'll have to read my camera manual though...can't seem to set my aperture lower than 5.6???
Great! I hope I get some time, in between packing boxes and cleaning (we are moving) to take some photos!
Johanna - The lowest aperture setting depends on the lens you are using. It should have the number on your lens. Most zoom lenses have a smaller aperture at the widest angle and a bit bigger when you zoom in. (eg. My 18-70mm lens: at 18mm its lowest aperture is f3.5, but at 70mm goes to f4.5)
You can buy lenses that have a constant & low aperture, but they are VERY expensive…and on my wish list! :D
Thanks heaps Emma! I got it down to 3.5 when I zoomed right out. Is that low enough to get a good BOKEH effect? I'll give it a go. Where does that name come from anyway?
I think its Japanese...maybe Andrew or Beth would know? Yep, F3.5 is wide enough - but you will get a more shallow depth of field if you zoom into your subject (even with a larger f-stop) just make sure there is lots of room between the subject & the background.
I find there are 2 different types of Bokeh - 1st, the smooth & silky kind when the background is out of focus (shallow DoF)
2nd (my favourite), the kind with the cool shapes in the out of focus area (like in my first light assignment photo - which is caused by the shape of your aperture & the right light hitting the lens at the right angle...hard to explain, you just have to play around until you get it right!)
i just went and looked back at that photo. It's the light behind the flower photo right? it's really nice.
Bindi did a good one with her first strawberry plant pic too.
