Nature by Emma

moon shine :)

I lOVE the moon - whether it is a bright beautiful full moon, or a delicate crescent, it just amazes me. Tuesday the moon was full, so I jumped at the opportunity to take photos of it. I walked up the mountain, froze my hands off for over half an hour, and came home with NO good photos :( I did some research to find out how to photograph the moon. I realised that its better to take photos when it isn’t full, because the shadow will create more contrast & detail (makes sense now!). I went out a few days later & got this shot! I was pretty happy with my second attempt. I love challenging myself each fortnight & learning more & more. I enjoyed this topic.

(I dont know if you can click the photo to view it bigger...but if you can, there is some cool detail in the moon. Sometimes blogger wont let me see photos bigger when I click...??)

I could make it bigger when I clicked on the picture. The detail is great with all the craters you captured.

I could make it bigger too. Looks very cool big with those craters around the edge. It is amazing. I'm really glad you stuck with the moon for your nature shot because I noticed it was full this week too but didn't have any luck when I tried to capture it (not enough zoom, too washed out). I'd be keen to see some shots of it not full if it cooperates and you get a chance.
I love the twinkling stars in the second photo as well. I think you did a good job with the exposure on both of them.
I'd consider the banner photo another great nature photo example of yours as well.
I have a couple of questions for everyone though....
Does anyone know how to post pictures right next to each other? And also, is it possible to post raw images?

That must have been a nippy exercise at night in our weather!

Great imagination in these shots.

Did you use a tripod for the moon alone picture?

Thanks. Johanna – if there is a clear night I’ll go out & get some of it not full. Were you thinking a half moon, or a crescent?? With posting photos next to each other, I’d have to change the template, so the column is wider (ie. Get rid of the left column & have it all posting space? Do you want me to try that?) Are you shooting RAW? I would do all editing & save the original as a tiff file, but then for posting on the web, export a jpeg version. RAW files are way too big. I’m not even sure if blogger supports .tiff or NEF files anyway.

Yeah, I used a tripod for both pics. If I had a steady hand I could have pulled it off without it – the shutter speed wasn’t all that slow, but I wanted to get it as sharp as possible.

What beautiful pictures Emma! You are such a good photographer. Taking pictures of the moon isn't easy and your shots look very professional. I agree that it is fun to be learning and challenging oneself with this photography group. Thank you again for putting it together. Also, it is great that you actually took the time to research how to take photos of the moon so you could learn how and be able to get these amazing shots. :)
