Off Topic - Adam - Critique Request

This isn't on the current topic, but I thought I'd throw it up on the blog for two reasons:
1. I thought this was a pretty good job, even if I do say so myself, and wanted to show it off; and
2. Wanted to know what suggestions anybody has to make it better?
Emma said it was OK to put up, so hope everyone doesn't mind.

Quick bit of background. Elissa made this dress for our daughter last week. Our daughter wore it to church on Sunday, and Elissa asked me to take a photo of it to put on our blog. I did so, with my daughter posing in the photos. I thought that one of the photos would make for an interesting photomanipulation, so I ended up playing around with it by adding the castle background, and adding a dagger into her hand. So, quick question, are there any bits in the "manipulated" photo that stand out as looking "wrong" or which you would change? Oh, and for the record, my in-laws have already told us they don't like the photo at all, so feel free to pan it as well  :)

Here's the original:

And here's the result after playing around with it:

Ok, so I am no expert on superimposing images....so I dont know how much help I will be. I'm not usually a fan of this type of thing either.

But having said that, I think you have done a pretty good job with this. I had to look at it bigger to pick up some rough bits. Her hair on the right isn't very smooth - you can see it easier where the background is lighter. Also her dagger hand has a little bit on her bottom knuckle.

Maybe your in-laws dont like it since it is Jayde in the photo. Maybe the concept would work better with someone a bit older? Just thinking about it from their point of view...

Did you use photoshop? What version? I know there are a few different ways to do this. Did you refine the edges once she was selected?

The thing that I think works really well is the overall editing. The colouring on your daughter suits that background & it all blends in nicely. I think what normally turns me off these sorts of images, is that you see so many dodgy "sunset beach" shots with a person plonked in it - the lighting on the person is very inconsistent with the background, thus making it look VERY fake. (do you know the ones I mean??:))

But yours is really quite good in that regard, so I would be happy with it. :D

I am in no way qualified to comment on any type of photography!! :) I think the dress etc. works well with the background. I really like the dagger and the 'smile'. The smile takes on a whole new meaning in the superimposed version. I think the only thing that worries me a little is that Jayde is young, and agree with Em in that respect.

Apart from that, I like the lighting too and I think you have done a good job with it.

We like the photo- yes she could be a liitle young, but that's also Jayde. You did well with the background change- the other one is washed out and this is more dramatic.

Thanks for all the feedback ladies - I'll look at trying to do a "revised" version to fix up the things that have been mentioned.

I'm using Photoshop CS3 for the editing, and there's still so much to learn - eg I realsied that I've used destructive editing in this instead of applying some effect layers et al.

Muchly appreciated.
