Obviously the sky is my point of focus in this photo, thus it takes up 2/3 of the photo

Putting the mug off to the right creates a more interesting photo, as opposed to putting it smack bang in the center

For a simple portrait, I usually put the eyes in the top third of the photo. (the eyes are typically the point of focus in a portrait)

Cant wait to see everyone else's photos :)

I love these photos and am so glad you picked the rule of thirds, it is really something i need to work on. Sorry I didn't submit an assignment in time.
This is a great topic. I had no idea. My camera even has a grid option that I didn't know what it was there for so didn't have it turned on.
The photo of Noah is great. Great tip about eye placement too. Thanks.
I like the blue in the railing in the next photo, it brings out the cup and the colour of the autumn leaves just makes that photo so rich and warm looking.
the sky one is gorgeous. I love how the ones closer to the top have more grey in them too. Do you use a filter?
Thanks :) I do have a polarizing filter but haven't used it for AGES!!! I should get it out again - its good for landscapes. Last time I used it was down the coast...very nice results.
